Solar Power System for Kyiv Regional Perinatal Center

Categories:

About the Project

The RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation has implemented a unique project – the installation of an advanced solar power station with an energy storage system at the Kyiv Regional Perinatal Center.

Although this is critical infrastructure, electricity has been cut off twice here since the beginning of the full-scale war. The lives of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit depend on uninterrupted power supply.

Overview:

The Kyiv Regional Perinatal Center:

  • Provides over 44,000 women annually with various diagnostic services, including urogenital, cytogenetic, and reproductive examinations
  • The center handles over 1,100 deliveries annually, of which:
  • 70% have complications
  • 18-20% are premature births
  • The intensive care unit has unique experience in caring for infants, including saving a baby born weighing only 450 grams

Challenges before the solar power station installation:

  • Critical infrastructure was left without electricity twice during the full-scale war
  • The lives of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit completely depend on uninterrupted power supply
  • Previous backup systems (diesel generators) had limited autonomy and high operating costs

Project Objectives

To provide the neonatal intensive care unit with absolutely reliable and autonomous power supply, independent of external networks

Result:

A modern hybrid solar power station has been installed on the roof of the maternity department, which guarantees stable power supply to the most critical medical units.

Technical parameters of the solar power station:

  • Type: hybrid / roof-mounted
  • Panel capacity: 33 kW
  • Battery capacity: 30 kWh
  • Expected annual generation: 37,834 kWh
  • Expected annual greenhouse gas emission reduction: 20.64 ton

This initiative was made possible thanks to the support of GIZ, and companies Menlo Electric, sun.store, Sungrow, and JinkoSolar.

The main executor of the project is the RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation in collaboration with other non-governmental organizations within the framework of the “Renewable Energy Sources for a Sustainable Ukraine” project. The “Renewable Energy Sources for a Sustainable Ukraine” (R2U) project is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and with the support of the International Climate Initiative.
