In a recent address to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Ivano-Frankivsk, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a chilling message, stating that the terrorist state may try to replicate acts of terror against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this autumn and winter. He called for utmost readiness at both the national and local levels to counter this potential threat.
“It’s clear that the enemy will attempt to repeat terrorist attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector this autumn and possibly this winter. We must be prepared in every respect, at the highest state level and at the level of every city, town, and village,” President Zelenskyy emphasized.
Providing insights into the nation’s defense strategies, President Zelensky outlined two critical elements for safeguarding Ukraine’s energy system. Firstly, ensuring the physical protection of energy facilities against missile attacks, drone strikes, sabotage, and cyber assaults. Secondly, establishing efficient energy management systems that can continue energy generation and distribution even in times of war.
“We will do everything we can on the state and security levels. The local communities’ responsibility is to help defense and security forces and the government carries out measures to protect the energy sector and to be prepared for difficult challenges and energy emergencies,” Zelenskyy asserted passionately.
We remind you that according to the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Halushchenko, between October 10th and March 9th, the enemy launched a series of extensive attacks on energy facilities, resulting in 271 confirmed strikes on crucial infrastructure.
The impact of these attacks was severe, with 50% of the entire energy system, including both power generation and transmission systems, being lost. Regrettably, some facilities were completely devastated and cannot be restored.
