In a world where climate change and energy security are becoming increasingly urgent issues, Ukrainian communities are taking bold steps towards sustainable development. The transition from traditional coal energy sources to renewables not only improves the environmental situation in the regions but also opens up new economic opportunities and contributes to global efforts in combating climate change.
Why is this important?
1. Environmental Safety and Sustainable Development
Renewable energy sources, such as solar, are clean, renewable, and waste-free. Unlike coal, they do not pollute air, water, and soil, significantly improving the ecological situation in the regions. Transitioning to such energy sources allows communities to develop sustainably, preserving natural resources for future generations.
2. Combating Climate Change
Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a key factor in fighting global warming. Each community that transitions from coal industry to renewable energy sources makes a significant contribution to reducing Ukraine’s and the world’s carbon footprint.

Investments in alternative energy stimulate the local economy, creating new jobs and business opportunities. This is especially important for coal regions facing economic transformation challenges.
4. Increasing Energy Independence
Developing own renewable energy sources reduces the dependence of communities and the country as a whole on imported fossil fuels, enhancing energy security and resilience to energy price fluctuations.
5. Forming a New Energy Consumption Culture
The transition to renewable energy sources promotes environmental awareness among the population and forms a responsible attitude towards energy resource use.
A vivid example of such transformation is the project in the Slobozhanske community, implemented with the support of Repower Ukraine and the “New Energy” program from the German government. The project assesses the solar potential of municipal building roofs for the future installation of solar power plants.
This project is part of a larger initiative “New Energy – Promoting Dialogue for Sustainable Development of Ukrainian Coal Regions”. The project is implemented by partner organizations Germanwatch, the Center for Environmental Initiatives “Ecoaction”, the Luhansk Regional Human Rights Center “Alternative” with the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
