In today’s world, where energy security is becoming an increasingly critical issue, Ukraine stands on the brink of important changes. The development of renewable energy sources (RES) opens new horizons for the country, especially in the context of war, the pursuit of energy independence, and European integration.

Ukraine, with its rich natural resources, has significant potential for developing various forms of “green” energy. The windy expanses of the steppes, sunny fields of the south, powerful rivers, and abundant biomass create ideal conditions for implementing RES. However, the path to fully utilizing this potential is not without obstacles. The inconsistency of energy policy and challenges related to the war create significant difficulties for the stable development of the sector.

Despite these obstacles, Ukraine has achieved important successes in RES development. A key moment was the synchronization of the Ukrainian energy system with the European ENTSO-E network in March 2022. This step not only strengthened the country’s energy security but also opened new opportunities for electricity export to the EU. Further increase in export capacities with neighboring EU countries created additional incentives for the development of “green” energy in Ukraine.

European integration plays a key role in transforming Ukraine’s energy sector. The REPowerEU plan, approved by the European Commission, envisions increasing the share of RES in the EU’s energy balance to 45% by 2030. This initiative creates a powerful impetus for the development of renewable energy in Ukraine, opening prospects for exporting “green” electricity and integrating into the European energy market.

Ukrainian authorities are also taking important steps to support the RES sector. The adoption of laws on energy storage systems and market liberalization for RES producers creates favorable conditions for industry development. Resuming work on implementing “green” auctions and developing a new model of consumer support (Net billing) demonstrate the state’s commitment to creating effective mechanisms for stimulating RES.

The development of renewable energy brings not only energy independence but also significant economic and environmental benefits. Creation of new jobs, attraction of investments, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions – all this makes RES a key factor in Ukraine’s sustainable development.

However, to fully realize the potential of RES, it is necessary to overcome a number of challenges. Ensuring stability and consistency of state policy in the field of RES, modernizing energy infrastructure, and creating a favorable investment climate are tasks that require immediate attention.

The development of renewable energy sources is not just a technological choice but a strategic priority for Ukraine. It is a path to energy independence, economic prosperity, and full integration into the European community. Successful realization of RES potential will allow Ukraine not only to ensure its own energy security but also to become an important player in the European energy market, contributing to sustainable development and environmental safety of the entire region. This ambitious task requires joint efforts of the government, business, and society, but the result is worth these efforts – an energy-independent, environmentally clean, and economically prosperous Ukraine.

In the context of these ambitious plans and challenges, it is important to note specific initiatives that are already being implemented at the local level. A vivid example is the project “Renewable Energy Sources for a Sustainable Ukraine,” implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). Within this project, the RePower Ukraine fund is already paving the way for RES implementation for Ukrainian communities. In particular, this initiative covers the Mena and Sosnytsia communities in Chernihiv Oblast, the Konotop community in Sumy Oblast, and the Kremenchuk community in Poltava Oblast. Such projects not only demonstrate the practical implementation of the RES development strategy but also create real models of energy independence at the community level that can be scaled throughout the country. This underscores that the transition to renewable energy sources in Ukraine is not just state policy, but a reality that is already changing people’s lives on the ground, creating the foundation for a sustainable and energy-independent future for Ukraine.
