The RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation has implemented another ambitious project in the Kyiv region, installing a modern solar power plant and energy storage system at the Brovary Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital. This project not only ensures stable electricity supply for the medical facility but also marks an important step towards energy independence and environmental sustainability for the entire Kyiv region.

This is truly remarkable and primarily a testament to the people’s achievements. This experience should be shared and applied to other facilities in Brovary, the region, and throughout Ukraine”, – Torsten Woellert, Energy Counsellor at the EU Delegation to Ukraine.
The choice of Brovary Hospital was not random. The Kyiv Regional Military Administration and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine recommended focusing on this facility, as the hospital has received cluster status and, despite being located in Brovary, even serves residents of the left bank of Kyiv.
The hospital serves over 187,000 residents of Brovary and the Brovary district annually. In total, the medical facility has 24 departments and centers, and the installed solar power plant is specifically designed for backup power supply to the hospital’s intensive care unit. Therefore, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply to this hospital is critically important for a wide range of patients.
However, this is not the foundation’s first solar power plant project for hospitals in the Kyiv region – last year, with the foundation’s support, the hospital in Irpin was equipped with solar panels and a backup power system. The foundation has also implemented two solar power plant projects for medical facilities in Kharkiv.
The project for the hospital in Brovary reflects the key objectives of the foundation in ensuring energy resilience of critical municipal infrastructure, especially to overcome power supply challenges.

- Solar power plant capacity: 24 kW

- Backup power system: 28.8 kWh
The solar power plant is designed and built using components manufactured in Europe by the German company SMA and metal structures of benchmark quality produced in Ukraine by SOLARSteelConstruction. SMA is a leading European manufacturer of inverter equipment for solar power plants, known for its reliable, high-quality products, and has been operating in Ukraine since 2016.
“This project, which has been in implementation since March 2023, is not just about installing solar panels and backup batteries. It is primarily about the energy independence of the Brovary community, the resilience of critical infrastructure, and ensuring medical services for residents of the Brovary community, despite challenges with constant power outages,” noted the RePower Ukraine foundation. “We are creating a model of supporting energy supply for hospitals that needs to be scaled to other medical facilities throughout Ukraine with the participation of local and central authorities.”

The project was implemented by the RePower Ukraine foundation in close cooperation with the Brovary City Council, Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Brovary District Administration, and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, demonstrating the effectiveness of partnerships between the public sector, authorities, and medical institutions.

The assistance of the German Solar Association BSW, in particular, President Jorg Ebel and BSW Director David Wedepohl, as well as the entire team of the European solar association Solar Power Europe led by Walburga Hemetsberger, who have been providing support to Ukraine since 2022 as part of the joint Solar Supports Ukraine initiative, is very important for the project implementation. Their dedication and belief in the project made it possible, as the campaign to attract equipment and funds for this hospital began in the spring of 2023, and the implementation of the solar power plant installation project became possible in 2024.
Special gratitude to the German Government, which systematically supports Ukrainian communities in implementing renewable energy sources. In particular, with the support of the German Government and GIZ, the project “Renewable Energy Sources for a Sustainable Ukraine” is currently being implemented, within which 14 communities will receive funding for the development of renewable energy.
